Those prices range from €119.99 for Home Premium, €285 for Professional and €299 for Ultimate. All are substantially higher than the prices for U.S. buyers, a fact that Microsoft has tried to dispute. Is it possible Windows 7 will be cheaper in a month? Microsoft may return with another discount later -- as the Oct. 22 launch date gets within shouting distance -- but a deeper price cut this summer is very unlikely. Microsoft's selling Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $49.99 until July 11 in the U.S. and Canada, and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $99.99. Actually, "until July 11" might not be accurate, as Microsoft has made it clear with repeated references to "until supplies last" that it may cut short the deal.

For students, the best options come with newer versions of Windows. European prices are a veritable snake pit of confusion. First of all, Microsoft won't be selling "Upgrade" editions of the new OS until at least 2010, since it faces technical issues with upgrading from Windows Vista. In fact, Microsoft will block customers in the European Union from doing "in-place" upgrades, which would leave some version of Internet Explorer on the machine.

The trick in shopping for these machines is to skip the front door and go straight for the business section. Among online merchants, for example, Dell offers filters to show all available desktops and all-in-ones and laptops running Windows 7. HP has separate pages for business desktops and laptops, but you have to look at each model to find the models with Windows 7 available. Six years later, Windows 7 is in the rear-view mirror. Most of the deals listed in those original posts are no longer available.

We weren't able to find any "OEM" edition pricing at the usual suspects, but assume that Microsoft will be offering Windows 7 to small mom-and-pop computer makers who build PCs. Microsoft is not cutting a deal with Vista Ultimate users, as one analyst had urged and as users, still angry over Microsoft's failure to deliver on its "Ultimate Extras" promise, had wanted. The company is not repeating the "Extras" concept with Windows 7 Ultimate. The largest price cut, the 17% drop for the full version of Windows Home Premium, did not match the smallest price reductions that Microsoft made in February 2008 for the struggling Vista.
In January 2015, Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7, and the five-year extended support phase began. In January 2020, the Windows 7 support lifecycle will officially end. It was publicly released more than six years ago, on October 22, 2009.

To exercise downgrade rights, you can use media for Windows 7 Professional that you acquire from any source. During installation, don't enter a product key. After completing installation, you'll need to activate your newly installed copy of Windows 7 by using the telephone activation option and explaining that you are using downgrade rights. If you just need the software, you can still buy Windows 7 software in shrink-wrapped retail and OEM packages, sometimes at prices that are literally too good to be true. If you're an IT pro or developer who needs Windows 7 for testing, you also have subscription options, although they're less of a deal than they were six years ago.
